State of the Artist 3/10/2014

I suppose, due to the mixed content nature of the posts, I'm technically launching the State of the Artist series for 2014 now....

View halloo, all!!

I *think* I'm caught up with everything now... maybe? I've reposted Work-A-Week #2 for this post because I've included the handful of WIP pics I remembered to take for this painting. I'm also including the previous week's Daily Doodle sketches. If you'd like to see these as they're completed every day, please Like my Facebook Page (HERE or search for Silvertales Studio in Facebook's search bar) or follow my Twitter feed (@silvertales) as I upload them there daily.

Work-A-Week 2014 Project

Work-A-Week 2 (Day 28)
I do have a few WIP pics for this piece, and the finished piece will follow.

This is my set up in the kitchen. Unlike my usual set up in the dining room, the light is directly overhead in the kitchen, so the light is a lot better here. The photocopy seen just off to the right is actually for the nebula painting and is the only WIP pic I remembered to take. >.<

* * *

Toning the ground with a wash of Ultramarine Blue and Payne's Gray, building up where I know I'm going to want darker concentrations later: storm clouds, piles of bodies, etc, and keeping it light in the center, where it will "shine" down on the figure.

* * *

More build up, putting in the tower on the left, and adding a little texture to the rise it sits on.

* * *

Starting the underpainting for the figure, putting in the shadows in the same Ultramarine Blue and Payne's Gray mix to keep the shadows consistent with the mood of the rest of the painting.

* * *

The final refining of the darks I want in the storm clouds, bodies, figure and drapery. This was the last step before the little bits of color I added. I wanted this piece to have a very monochromatic feel with a very subtle skin tone, leaving just the deep reds of the banner to pop.

* * *

Original Painting: $300
11x17" Watercolor

This piece was also enlarged to 11x17 from the original 9x12" drawing and is completed entirely in watercolor, mostly Ultramarine blue, Payne's Gray, and a *tiny* bit of Burnt Umber. This is one of those concept images that keeps coming back to me, expanded and slightly different every time. While I do like this execution, I am sure I'll revisit it at least a few more times until I'm confident that I've gotten the concept behind the image to say what I want it to.

Daily Doodle Batch #3:

This batch upload consists of the images from 3/1/14-3/9/14, next week's update should be back on schedule for the Daily Doodle batch uploads. *crosses fingers*

This past Saturday was my birthday, and it wasn't the best day ever, so the March 8/Day 67 doodle is a bit depressing...

Massive Update: 3/3/2014

View halloo, all!!

I am so very sorry for the lack of update last week! I was experiencing some pretty severe Technical Difficulties with both Photoshop and my computer in general, which slowed down my update and posting schedule of both the Work-A-Week Projects and the Daily Doodle batch posts.

But, things seems to have been resolved... I say seemed, since with computers, you never really know! So, I'll just get started! This is a pretty image-heavy post, so I apologize for that, too!

Daily Doodle Batch #2:

This batch upload consists of the images from 2/15/14-2/28/14, next week's update should be back on schedule for the Daily Doodle batch uploads. *crosses fingers*

Work-A-Week 2014 Project

Work-A-Week 1 (Day 21)
Unfortunately, I forgot to take WIP pictures of the first of the Work-A-Week paintings... mostly because I actually started it three times before I was happy with how it was turning out. >.<

Original Painting: $300
11x17" Watercolor, ink, acrylic paint

The bulk of this piece is watercolor and liquid acrylics for the skin, hair, and nebula dress. The heavy body acrylic paint was used to add the bigger, bright white stars and clean up some of the liquid acrylic spatter that found it's way outside the lines of the dress. There's quite a bit of blank space above her, and I'm debating on including some text for the print version of this piece, added digitally... and maybe using this piece as a table banner for upcoming conventions!

Work-A-Week 2 (Day 28)
I do have a few WIP pics for this piece, and if people are interested, I'll post them, but I figured this update was going to be image-heavy as it was, so I'd leave them out.

Original Painting: $300
11x17" Watercolor

This piece was also enlarged to 11x17 and is completed entirely in watercolor, mostly Ultramarine blue, Payne's Gray, and a *tiny* bit of Burnt Umber. State of the Artist: 2/17/2014

View halloo, all!

I'd hoped to have the first Work-A-Week piece done today, but too many Real Life things have conspired against me... I am working on it, though, it's just not done. -_-;;;

That said, I have actually been drawing little doodles every day since the end of the Sketch-A-Day Project last month. These are much smaller, rougher sketches, about half the size of my Sketch-A-Day drawings and much quicker, less detailed sketches.

I thought I'd post them up for you!

In order to reduce the amount of posting (unlike the Sketch-A-Day Project) I'll be posting these once a week in batches instead of every day. My goal is to complete at least one sketch every day for 2014, leaving me with 365 sketches by the end of the year... let's see how well I can stick to the plan! *fingers crossed*

Today will be the heaviest of the Daily Doodles (as I've come to call them) posts, as I've been drawing for two weeks without posting any of them. On with the show!

I don't know that there is all that much to say about any of these, but feel free to ask questions if you're curious about any of them!

Some of these were inspired by the prompts posted by the Sketch_Dailies twitter account, and others were simply whatever struck my fancy. If you've got prompts or ideas, please, leave them in the comments!!

Some of these may end being developed into Monthly Postcard Project images or new, full-size, full-color finished works in the future, who knows! For now, they're just exercises to keep me drawing every day.

Well, I think that's all for this week's State of the Artist update here on Planet Kit, I hope to have the first Work-A-Week Project piece finished soon!

I thank you for joining me again this week! Feedback is the food which fuels the creative discussion between Artist and Audience, please, feel free to comment or leave suggestions for new projects!

Work-A-Week begins!

View halloo, all!

Well, the poll is closed and the votes counted, so the 5 Sketch-A-Day pieces with the most votes will be turned into finished pieces every week for the next 5 weeks!

Here are the winners, in descending order (please note, this may not be the order in which they are completed):

* * * *

* * *

People have asked if the Sketch-A-Day drawings are available for purchase, and the short answer is yes! As I make my way into the Work-A-Week project, I'll be uploading a list of their pieces and respective asking prices. So, if you've got your eye on a certain sketch or sketches, stay tuned for that post.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for the Sketch-A-Day project, it's much appreciated!

As a side note, I've been doodling since the end of the Sketch-A-Day project, on a smaller scale than the Sketch-A-Day originals (all at 9x12",) but, if people are interested in these other random doodles, let me know and I'll start posting them, too. These sketches are a lot rougher than the Sketch-A-Day pieces.

Work-A-Week 2014 Poll Time!

View halloo!!

Well, here we are, done with the January 2014 Sketch-A-Day Project and moving into the Work-A-Week Project, and that means, it's time for voting!

I've split the polls into 7 day segments (and one for the last 3 days.) They're all multiple option polls, so you can vote for as many pieces from each poll as you like. The 4/5 pieces with the most votes at the end of the next 48-hour period (through February 5th, 1pm, Eastern Time) will be the 4 pieces finished over the next few weeks. (Substitutions may be made in the event of ties, but all the upcoming Work-A-Week pieces WILL be chosen from January's 31 sketches.

Each piece will be posted on a Monday, back on the usual State of the Artist weekly schedule, complete with some progress photos, if people are interested.

Thank you!!
